Orthodontics

The ideal age for starting orthodontic treatment is between ages 8 to 14 years while growth is still occurring. Teeth can be moved using removable appliances or fixed braces. Crowding can require the extraction of teeth. Retainers may be necessary long after dental braces are placed, especially with orthodontic treatment of adults.

Invisalign® and Smile Shapers are forms of orthodontic treatment in Hamilton that correct many different types of malocclusions using a series of clear plastic trays called aligners. This series of clear aligners, each worn for a couple of weeks, incrementally moves the teeth into place until the final desired corrections are reached.

Treatment can be cosmetic to improve a person’s appearance, but it often enhances oral function.

Using orthodontic treatment, we can:

  • close gaps between the teeth
  • align the tips of the teeth
  • straighten crooked teeth
  • improve speech and chewing ability
  • boost the long-term health of gums and teeth
  • prevent long-term excessive wear or trauma of the teeth
  • treat an improper bite
  • help control harmful oral habits
  • maintain the space for a permanent tooth when a baby tooth is prematurely lost
