Dental Sealants

What are Dental Sealants?

Dental sealants are also known as tooth coatings because they cover your tooth with a transparent thin coating material. Dentists usually apply them on the chewing surfaces of the molars because they are more susceptible to bacteria that may lead to cavities. Once you have sealants, it protects your tooth from the harmful effects of food and bacteria.

This dental treatment is safe and suitable for your kids. Its application is painless and doesn’t need any anesthetics. The dentist will lightly paint them on each tooth in just a few minutes. The patient will not feel any side effects or get a strange taste. It can last up to four years before reapplying them if necessary. Nevertheless, adults can also benefit from them.

Tooth sealants are not expensive and yet, provide you with adequate protection that your tooth needs. If you already had fluoride treatment, you can have sealants at the same time. Having both treatments reduces the risk of your child getting cavities or tooth sensitivity.

Why are They Needed?

Children should get sealants on their permanent molars as soon as they come in–before decay attacks the teeth. Sealants, daily brushing and flossing, drinking fluoridated water, and regular dental check-ups are an important part of your child’s oral health and the best defense against tooth decay.
